In the Stone City you will find pleasant shopping with both a variety of unique shops and Norrland's largest city mall, IN: Galleria. Along the main street there are shops, cafés, restaurants, a fountain (Vängåvan) and two squares (Stora Torget and the Olof Palme torg). At the crossroads you will find many interesting shops and cafés to explore as well. Besides shopping, there is also culture and entertainment e. g., at the Kulturmagasinet, Casino Cosmopol, City Hall, Sundsvall's theater and Svea Theatre.
Geographically the Stone City is encompassed by the E4 in the east, by Köpmansgatan in the south, by Skolhusallén in the west, and by Sjögatan in the north. This rectangle defines the heart of historic Sundsvall with its grand and lavish brick houses from the time when the timber magnates dominated the city. The Stone Cityis Sweden's best preserved town from the late 1800s.
After the dramatic fire in 1888, when large parts of Sundsvall disappeared in the flames, it was decided that the material for the reconstruction would be stone. Using large amounts of insurance money a grand and impressive city was built. Thanks to extensive conservation efforts, we can still enjoy the Stone City's magnificent buildings, its boulevards and stories. Lift your eyes when you walk along the streets of the Stone City, and enjoy the gorgeous houses. The popular city tours are a great way to catch a glimpse behind the facades, and take in some of the exciting stories of the gentry and servants who lived there.
